THAD SPENCER: 1943-2013

“I turned pro when I was still 17. Sid Flaherty gave me $2,000 and a 1956 Mercury. It was yellow and black. I had it lowered, and it had flippers on it. The $2,000 was all in $5 bills. It looked like all the money in the world to me. ¶ Playing around was always part of my life. I started trying cocaine when I was about 18. After the Terrell fight, the party started. All the lights came on. For six months ’til the Quarry fight, I didn’t train. They kept postponing the fight, ’cause they knew the longer they put it off, the more I would party. Boy, were they right.”

Thad Spencer was supposed to be the next Joe Louis. Thad was always postponing the fight…Jerry Quarry was one of the best of his day and he destroyed Spencer and could have been the champ save for Frasier and Ali. Quarry broke a bone in his back prior to the final against Ellis, he could not bend at the waste. Spencer always had an excuse for a loss…why not show it was a fluke if what he says is true? Never did or could.
