THE EGO IS ALWAYS AT THE WHEEL: Why Floyd Mayweather Jr. Seems So Hesitant to Fight Manny Pacquiao

AUTHOR: | IN: THE CURRENT SCENE | COMMENTS: 88 Comments |

For the majority of the public, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the boxing anti-hero they love to hate.  He has been demonized from Manchester, England, to Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, to Quezon City in the Philippines.  In the last twenty years or so, only Mike Tyson has had a comparable boo-to-dollar ratio.  At turns petulant, shrewd, boastful, delusional, obnoxious, and witty, Mayweather Jr. is the poster boy for negative appeal.  Equal parts Falstaff, Yellow Kid, and Narcissus, Mayweather Jr. has earned his box office status by mastering the art of cartoon villainy.  Whether or not the windbag persona is an act hardly matters; in a reality television culture where tastelessness is often confused with personality, Mayweather Jr. has thrived by virtue of being the only boxer in the world people scorn enough to pay to see. For his part, Mayweather Jr. keeps up the act with a strange form of trash talking that is a combination of fear, bombast, lunacy, delusions of grandeur, anger, circumstantiality, threat, braggadocio, word salad, chutzpah, and contempt.

With the specter of Manny Pacquiao looming above him, Mayweather Jr. has taken his rants to a new level over the last few months, deluging the world with one excuse after another for not fighting some of the top fighters in the welterweight division, namely Manny Pacquiao.  What makes Mayweather Jr. say so many outlandish things?  Is it malice?  Is it pathological?   Is it mischief?  Is it vindictiveness—toward Bob Arum?  Is it insecurity, as so many task chair psychologists claim between emoticons?  And just why would Mayweather Jr. slight a potential gold mine bout with Pacquiao?

There are several possible answers to these questions, of course, but the choices can be narrowed to a few obvious—and possibly ironic—ones.  First, strangely enough, is money.  Two months ago Mayweather Jr. earned an obscene amount of lettuce to use Juan Manuel Marquez, at best an inflated lightweight, as target practice, and he stands to make outrageous fortunes every time he steps into the ring.  More importantly, as a bona fide star, Mayweather Jr. can cash seven figure checks against any prizefighter in the world, be it tomato can, lightweight, or a combination of both.  This, ultimately, is what makes him so reluctant to mix it up with some of the more dangerous men in the welterweight division: He has a good hustle going on, why risk it?  (By the way, this scheme is nothing new in boxing.  Greats like Jack Dempsey and Jack Johnson participated in some dubious bouts, and Floyd Patterson had one of the most comical reigns in boxing history.  Included among his title defenses was a bout with Pete Rademacher, a fighter making his pro debut against the heavyweight champion of the world.)  In addition, for HBO, the biggest player in boxing, the words “money for nothing” are as sacrosanct as the Tennis Court Oath was to budding French revolutionists.   So, why should Floyd Mayweather Jr. risk his racket?

First of all, Mayweather is on the record as viewing Pacquiao as a no-risk proposition.  By his own strange calculations, probably arrived at with the aid of an abacus missing 90% of its beads,  Pacquiao is an “easy” fight.  If Pacquiao cannot beat him and the money is astronomical and he can quiet his critics by defeating the best fighter in the world, why the hesitation? In general, professional boxers do not fear each other.  Although there have been occasions throughout history when opponents have been petrified–King Levinksy against Joe Louis, Johnny Paycheck against Joe Louis, Alex Stewart against Mike Tyson–this conceit is blogosphere gibberish.  This brings us to the second strange reason for Mayweather dithering about potentially cashing the biggest paycheck he has ever seen.  Professional jealousy might be the answer to why Mayweather Jr. has avoided Pacquiao.  In short–and this may seem paradoxical–it might be ego keeping Mayweather Jr. from immediately accepting a bout with Pacquiao.

Few sports figures are as hot as Manny Pacquiao is right now, and every time he fights, Pacquiao pulls the rug out from under Mayweather Jr.  It is Pacquiao who made De La Hoya quit on his stool; it is Pacquiao who left Ricky Hatton unconscious in Las Vegas, it is Pacquiao who is willing to trade punches with quality fighters over and over. The latest news is that Pacquiao-Cotto pulled in bigger pay-per-view numbers than Mayweather-Marquez. Mayweather Jr. has been overshadowed by Pacquiao at every turn and now his ego is bruised beyond recognition.  Even outside the ring Pacquiao is beginning to catch up with “Money.”  Mayweather Jr. may have been featured on the Chelsea Lately Show, Dancing With the Stars and The George Lopez Show, but Manny Pacquiao has been featured in Time Magazine and The New York Times recently, and he was also a guest on Late Night with Jimmy Kimmel.   Of course, no boxer in the world can compete with his status as an icon in the Philippines.  In the United States, “Pacman” fever is also taking hold and this might be something Mayweather Jr. views with bitterness.  Call it status envy if you will.

By giving Pacquiao a chance to fight him—and thereby a chance to beat him—Floyd Mayweather Jr. would be directly contributing to his own eclipse.  Pacquiao can only get bigger at his own expense.  On separate tracks, Mayweather can still look good against softer opposition and woof on about his royal status in boxing, especially if the public continues to pay to see him.  Otherwise, it makes no sense for Mayweather Jr. to downplay what might turn out to be one of the biggest events in the history of boxing, especially if Mayweather views Pacquiao as easy pickings.

Contentious negations will now begin, and some are already predicting that Mayweather Jr., like Houdini, will find some sort of escape from a fight with Pacquiao. It seems unlikely that Mayweather Jr. will be able to turn down 25-30 million dollars–and perhaps more for a rematch–but when the ego is at the wheel, no one can ever be certain.

thats the best comment,amen...

pacman in 6,

just give me a boxer who got 7 championship division belts and a boxer whos weight started @ 106lbs and still fighting @ 145lbs ...
other than Pacquiao , then maybe i will reconsider mayweather marquez as better than him...

to dave winstedt, you hit it right...makes more sense than zarate's piece... keep it up

Great post this will really help me.

I think Mayweather can win against Pacquiao, though it may not be in a way fans would see as impressive or convincing. Mayweather's problem is his guts is not as big as his skills. He'll surely find a way to avoid fighting Pacquiao. If not, he'll find a way to get an unfair advantage just like what he did when he fought Marquez. I won't be surprised if he does the thing he's been accusing Pacquiao of.

You guys have the point that mayweather will outbox, take advantage manny because of his size and speed which is most likely the key points that makes this COWARD BOY advantage if this game will push through. but one thing I could only say to your "GAYWEATHER," charrr!!! that he should be careful with manny because this guy would always make a difference... don't just under estimate the left and right side ways movements that are so explosive coming from nowhere... I agree that GAYWEATHER has also speed but I don't think his speed can manage the speedy and flashy manny.... let's just see......^i^

Cosell Marie Abunda, you re 100% percent right, Pacquiao will lose his concentration on the fight and will lose if Mayweather uses this tactic, his really good at this..... running. Manny will keepchasing him, by so doing he will make mistake andloyd will make him pay. That is something Manny has to work on, or he will lose and could probably get KOd. Good feedback.

I really don't get to watch much TV and boxing but this seems quite interesting since Pacquiao stepped in and made waves across international media. I may not know much about boxing (considering I haven't been inside the ring and ever tried slugging it out with others) but watching the last few fights of both Mayweather and Pacquiao, I do think Mayweather has the upper hand with his defense. He doesn't punch hard and couldn't even take Marquez down. He just wore the old man out (who, by the way, was still amazingly performing well for his age) by a "hit-and-run" tactic. Even looking at the slow motion captures show that Mayweather really moves fast. It's like Marquez was just sitting there waiting for Floyd's punch. And he can't even counter fast enough to catch Floyd's chin.

I'm not pro-Floyd but that's the advantage he has as seen in his last few fights, and it's a big advantage compared to Pacquiao. I've watched his recent fight with Cotto and during the last rounds when Cotto was just moving away from him, he just stops and doesn't pursue anymore. That just might be Pacquiao's weakness if he would fight Floyd, not catching up. If he would be able to greatly improve on his hand speed and counterpunching skills, he will definitely get the win against Floyd. See, if Floyd moves in and Pacquiao lands just one counter to the chin or to the body even before Floyd can hit him and run, that would slow Floyd down, or most likely knock him out cold with that one punch. True, he hasn't been battle tested which gives the greater possibility of Floyd being that soft. If Pacquiao doesn't improve in that way, he'll just get tired of running around and definitely lose on points.

That's just my take. It may not be that intelligent but I think it does make a bit of sense.

I stand corrected... Pacquiao will lose because he will get tired of chasing Floyd for 11 rounds... Manny will collapse and Mayweather wins without throwing a punch. That's how great a runner this Floyd is!

But what kind of boxer does boxing need to have more: a boxer like Mayweather or a boxer like Pacquiao?

Hi Nathan,

Thank for checking in. I am not saying Mayweather will not fight Pacquiao...I am saying it seems odd for him not to jump at $30 million....Fighters routinely try to chase the big money in this business because there is so little of it to go around and so little time to actually get it. Mayweather does not have to worry about his legacy because of short attention spans and the fact that mediocre fighters abound in the Hall of Fame....If I had to guess, I would say the fight will happen sooner than later, although Mayweather will not concede on the weight.

yeah it may be the biggest fight in years!!! but it may become the most boring & snoring fight also.....one will be aggressive while the other will run, run ,run. Is it worth to pay? we may become a victim of promotion and hype in the end.

i am just a fan... i don't want those cheap talks from Mayweather... the balls is already in his hand... all he has to do is to stop talking and start negotiating... he will not do it not unless he has no balls... Pacquiao for sure will be more than willing to fight him as long as the purse is fair... needless for those talks such as "Pacquiao did not call me-out" or "Mayweather will win because he is more elusive" or 'Pacquiao will win because he can take a punch and has the speed"... all "Team Mayweather" and "Team Pacquiao" has to do is to agree on the terms and let the fists of Mayweather and Pacquiao do the talking inside the ring... and may the best man wins... thank you for giving me the space to air my views.

Hey Gayweather lovers can u pls elaborate more fighters that past their prime? did anyone of you said that before the fight? they past their prime? alot of you are idiot you should said that before the fight and not after your fighter destroyed by pacman alot of excuses have been made. be a man like what cotto did accept what is true Pacman is the best fighter. And Gayweather just picking up fighters that could not beat him i think he needs Arce or Calderon next in his list.
And why not fighting Mosley? Mosley aggressively called him up after the fight with marquez? Why not Margarito? why not Williams? Why not Cotto? and now Pacquiao. Those are the top welterweights now and risky enough to gave Gayweather his 1 lose.He will made this negotiation with PACMAN tough for the fight not to continue. I know Gayweather is a defensive fighter and he is no doubt and he is doing it at best by ducking top welterweight fighters he's doing DEFENSIVE MECHANISM to be specific "RATIONALIZATION" in psychology.

Mayweather will wait as long as possible for all these great welterweights to beat each other up and then face them when they're already old and disadvantage. That is the kind of boxer Floyd is, shrewd and very calculating. He may possess a great defensive skills but in no way he is an ATG because he has failed over and over again in fighting men his own size. Picking a fight with Marquez is a joke and only proved he needs more time to grow his balls.

If this fight does not happen its strictly because Manny Pacquiao doesn't want it. Period. To be the best you have to beat the best. And, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the best. You guys can make up lies and excuses all day and night but it won't change the fact. Take the 60/40 cut Pacquiao. Mayweather is more established as a PPV draw. You, Freddie "The Mouth" Roach, and Bob Arum all know this. So if you are not afraid, you should just give respect where its due and take the cut that you deserve, and don't try to negotiate your way out of the fight.

I just want this fight to happen so pfb can take care of buisness like he always has and give you guys another reason to hate him

Hey Carlos,
Great article and I think you have nailed it on the head. However, among your valid thesis, I can't see Mayweather walking away from this fight indefinitely despite your ego theory. I believe what will take control of his ego and put him in the ring, outside of the enormous paycheck, is the fact that his own legacy will forever be debated for never having taken a bout with Pacquiao.

Hi,

Thanks for the thoughtful comment, it really boosts the IQ of this site. For your information, I happen to be Puerto Rican, but a troll like you probably thinks all former Spanish colonies are the same. If you know anything about Spanish colonies, of course. Please continue to post worthwhile comments when you get the opportunity...you know, after your nurse changes your adult diapers, removes your bib, and wheels you into the Activity Room. I encourage you to keep trolling, but try not to get any excrement on the keyboard.

Here's another Filipino writer who knows nothing about boxing but LOVES Manny Pacquiao. Dude you haven't got a clue!

Zarate Did PBF run circles around Dela Hoya? Was'nt it a split decision? Did Pac run circles around Dela Hoya? PBF has not fought one of the best offensive fighter this decade and Pac has never lost to an opponent that he has backed up. Keep betting against Pac and you will loss AGAIN!!

I love Mayweather. I am always there to watch all his big fights. But this time, if he is going to duck Pacquiao, he will be loosing one avid fan. We deserve to see Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. I think that 50-50 split is fair for both fighters. Mayweather is a hot item in the US, but let's face it Pacquiao managed to carry himself at the top too.

Jason Noel....you're on a site where you can post comments and opinions about the article and the people aforementioned in the article and you post an opinion on how everyones opinions aren't worth anything? lol.

Let's just all go through life not having an opinion about anything then because it's upsetting to you. Fascist.

Mayweather Jr. is a marketing champion. He is not a real champion. He is a fraud, cheater, money crazed, coward and a disgrace to sweet science.People watch him fight because they want him to lose to shut his big mouth.Manny Pacquiao fights for the glory of fans, boxing, and his country.Whenever he fights, he lays down his life in the ring ( not ride in a bicycle )taking on the best and bigger opponents.Manny is the rarest gem in boxing. He will go down in the history as the fighter who single-handedly revived boxing.

@Jorgge Zarate. Regarding Pacquiao vs JMM. that's sour graping. Pls give the PACMAN his due respect. He beats the best guy in his division. You just cant accept why PACMAN is still good even moving up in weights! can u answer this questions? can JMM withstand against Miguel Cotto? I dont think so! I think he'll get KO within 6 rounds! against the Golden Boy? I dont know if he can go the distance! so, think Mr. Jorge. Pls pay respect to someone that is great for the sport. And against Mayweather, lets hope that the fight will materialize.

***Oh and one last note. Pacquiao is the champion, the belt holder. He shouldn't have to express any over the top interest to fight a non-title holder, a challenger, which is what Mayweather is at the moment. I've watched all of Manny's post fight interviews and he generally always says the same thing which is he's "going to take vacation and it's up to his promoters for the next fight." He does speak very broken English and he the counterpart to Mayweather meaning he is actually a very humble and nice human being. He doesn't talk like Floyd does so of course he isn't screaming from the top of his lungs that he wants to fight Floyd. That isn't his style and never has been.

There's one way to find out.

jorge zarate, better watch boxing before making any comments, your funny guy!!!
floyd is a bussiness man and not a boxer, he's been ducked to mosley, margarito & cotto to name a few.he choosed the smaller marquez with 2 pounds weigh advantaged.( ? )oh man!...look at his tko record and compare agaisnt manny's record.
...those ugly boring fights just to save his zero loss record. unlike manny, full of spectacular excitement whenever he climbs the ring.

Jorge Zarate -

You are not stronger at 126lbs and 130lbs than you are 15lbs heavier. It's just not happening. Speed wise of course you are faster when you are lighter but of course there aren't many knock downs at that light of weight either. Both fights went to dicision, both fighters weren't ko'd. Great fights though, both very close and I can see the arguement of where people think that Marquez won at least one of the fights but that doesn't mean a thing. Now you are sounding very much like Floyd in arguing just because a figher has lost he can't be the best. What a fallacy in arguing. Ali lost, Duran lost, are they not with a dime because of it? Most all of the elite hall of famers have lost at least once in their careers. Many people also believed that Floyd lost his first fight with Castillo but that is obviously left absent from your arguement as well.

Though I am not completely one sided, Pacquiao's fight with De La Hoya was ridiculous. Anyone dropping that much weight especially so late in their career is a huge disadvantage to their physical abilities it's not even funny and Pacquiao actually coming in as the heavier more comfortable fighter of course made dismantling De La Hoya look easy. Same for Mayweather and Marquez. Mayweather couldn't even meet the catch weight for his bout. He had to payout Marquez because he came in heavier. Both of these bouts were mismatching to begin with.

As for the fighters themselves. Mayweather is one of the slickest boxers I have ever seen. He's like Roy Jones, Winky Wright and Bernard Hopkins all wrapped into one fast muthaf***** but that being said Pacquiao is not a one dimensional fighter has Mayweather is so absurdly shouting. Pacquiao has both foot and hand speed, he creates angles and he has the strength and chin to battle against true Welterweights such has Cotto. (**side note, we all know Cotto was beaten by a cheating Margarito, even Cotto, as he tried to cheat in the Mosley fight.) The advantages I see for Mayweather are his counter punching ability and his defense but he has never been battle testing. Mainly because he doesn't really fight. He runs and hides and looks for mistakes and that's fine. He's a smart boxer, I give him that. I know many of people have said he isn't battle tested before but it's not as easy to make that happen as one would so casually say it as I did. Floyd's defense is what makes him not battle tested. He has his own fortress in there. Where other's have failed I believe Pacquiao can and will succeed. He creates the angles and has the speed to confuse Mayweather has well as the stamina and chin to keep doing it. I know, Hatton tried to do the same thing right? Keep pressure on Floyd and break him down and Hatton ended up getting knocked out. Yeah, that's because Hatton was never really as good as everyone made him out to be. He was a baller with absolutely no movement. He just stood in front of you and threw big looping punches. That is NOT Pacquiao.

Hand speed in the fight may be a split
Footwork goes to Pacquiao
Defense to Floyd
Stamina to Pacquiao
Strength slightly to Pacquiao if not a split
Heart to Pacquiao
Corner to Pacquiao
Ring leadership will be the deciding factor in this fight. Which fighter can make the other fight their fight. I believe Pacquiao has it in him to do that more than Floyd.

Pacquiao, 11th round tko of Mayweather.

What is also left absent from your one sided arguement is the lack of world class talent Floyd has persued to fight. Before Floyd retired there were plenty of talented fighters out there but he claimed he had become bored with the "lack of competition" available. At the time there was Mosley, Cotto, Margarito and maybe even Paul Williams but he still chose to retire because he wanted to keep that "0" in tact.

people, we are always taking sides, but let the fight begin.

Blah blah blah.... too many boxing geniuses out here who think that their comments are worth anything. Have you guys even experienced fighting in the ring or what its like to be a boxer? All you have seen are boxing fights that happen on the fight night and I bet 99% of you just see it on your dumb Television. And suddenly you all sound like boxing experts! So guys, just some words to put you in your proper places.......when the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight will finally happen, Place your bet on who you believe is the best boxer. Not just a dollar or twenty dollar bet... make it quite substancial, something that will affect your finances to the north if you win and drag you to the south if you lose. Otherwise, just shut the F*** up!!!

Jorge Zarate: Why are you only listing notables fights for the Pacman. Yes Hatton was damaged goods, but it's not like Mayweather MADE him damaged goods. I see Hatton as a fighter that's not on the level as May or Manny. This has nothing to do with damaged goods. If that's the case, then any level below May and Manny are considered 'damaged goods' by your standards. Two, you act as if De la Hoya was at his prime when he fought Mayweather. And also, why not share some light on the decision and the closeness of the fight. Didn't Pac beat Marquez by SD? Just like May SD'd Oscar. And now you have Juanma Marquez--first off, if you, a boxing fan, sees that fight with May as a great outing, then you are greatly mistaken. Yes Pac beat Oscar, but when did you expect him to fight the golden boy? In 2003? When Pac was a midget and Oscar was a welterweight? How about answering why Floyd didn't fight Hatton at 140... even though Collazo, Urango, etc hurt Hatton, he still made it a welterweight affair. If Manny beating Hatton is sub-standard in your book, then Floyd beating the number 1 140 fighter at 147 is below that.
You've failed to mention the fact that the author hit it on the dot. Pacman took it to Oscar, regardless. Mayweather DID NOT. Floyd DID KO Hatton but did you see the fight? How can that top watching Ricky's wife in shambles? And you can ask who did more damage... With Cotto, why hasn't Floyd stepped into the ring with him? Or Mosley? Or ANY WELTERWEIGHT? Instead he chose Marquez. Who wasn't even a Jr Welt.
C'mon, it's one thing to be on the bandwagon like most of the Flips in Manila... because they love the Pacman regardless, but me, I'ma fan of the sport. I'm on his bandwagon BECAUSE he will not be in line to fight ANOTHER TOP WELTERWEIGHT. What has Floyd done since beating a jr lightweight? I'll tell you: blow smoke about Saul Alvarez, a 19 year old NOBODY knows.
From your comment, which focuses solely on the Pacman in criticism, you should list both.
Don't forget, Floyd says that "hes an entertainer"... I'm sorry but there were snores in the household during his fight vs Marquez, a smaller, slower man.
Have you noticed that Floyd talks so much crap? And when has Manny disrespected any fighter? To be honest: If Floyd was the one who TKO'd Cotto and Manny was the one to UD Marquez, there'd be much, much trash talking. But instead, Mr self proclaimed king couldn't even take out the smaller man.
Listen to yourself-- and can you seriously tell me that Floyd is doing more for the fans and the sport?
Admit it, you just dislike Pacquiao. Because if the things that you listed bothered you as an unbiased fan, then you would NO DOUBT list the things that bothers MOST of the boxing community about FLOYD. But instead you ramble about BS on the one guy that is stepping up to the plate when Floyd isn't.

Good article. Much more literate than most boxing writers, for sure. But your article is predicated on a false statement. Being that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been hesitant or non-commital about a possible bout with Manny Pacquiao. In all reality, Pacquiao has been the one who seems to be hesitant to express even a desire to face Mayweather. I think that Pacquiao is a bit afraid of Mayweather. He even made an on camera joke once that Mayweather "might kick my butt".

In order for Floyd to fight Pacquiao is if the ring magazine put him at no.10 in pound for pound ranking and lesser people should watch his fights.

If mayweather can easily handle manny pacquiao, why is he not signing the contract to fight the pacman. is he scared to lost the zero(0). If he is really good, why not fight the pacman in 2010.

Everyone get off the Pacquiao Band Wagon.
David Diaz, De La Hoya past his prime!, Ricky Hatton (Damaged Goods) even Freddie Roach said he wasnt that good, Miguel Cotto, (Roached "Cotto isnt the same fighter after the Margarito fight") So your taking credit for beating guys who are not at your level or past there prime give me a break!!!!

Floyd Mayweather will run circles around Manny Pacquiao it would be an easy fight for him.
Juan Manuel Marquez face Manny Pacquiao at 126lbs and 130lbs when Pacquiao was a lot faster and a lot stronger, and he went the whole 12 with him twice.
In fights were many people thought he won!!
Many boxing analysts thought Juan Ma Won! Juan Manuel Marquez has won more rounds against Manny Pacquiao than Manny Pacquiao has won against him!
In the 2nd fight Juan Ma, Out landed Manny Pacquiao, out power punched Manny Pacquiao. out jabbed, statistically he was better than Manny Pacquiao in the 2nd fight, and he still lost by 1 point!!!!!!!
He was dropped 3 times, had a broken nose and still went all 12 with Manny Pacquiao in the first fight.
Marquez Countered punched Pacquiao, used his jab and distance against Pacquiao and he was very successful in the eyes of everyone!

Now you have Mayweather naturally bigger, faster, stronger, smarter, better defense, counter puncher .
He will run circles around Manny Pacquiao and make Manny Pacquiao look like a fool.

Mayweather is never standing in front of you, he throws and moves throws and moves. . he ties you up when he has to, he uses his jab to off set your timing.
He takes a step forward than a step back you reach, bam your done!
He waites for you to make a mistake and when you do your getting hit by two punches and than he is out the way!!!
He uses his distance and his jab and is not going to be dumb and let pacquiao bum rush him and throw all these punches he will tie him up!!!
Frustrate him push him back…

He matches Pacquiao hand speed, but is even faster with his feet.
He is naturally the bigger man and never takes time off the gym
He is born fighter!!!!
Will land the right hand all night against Manny Pacquiao!!!
Easy Fight For Mayweather very Easy Fight.

I think the responses above prove that Mayweather will always pull big numbers from people who are hoping to see him lose. Obviously, no risky fights are necessary when you can get this kind of response from the viewing public.

Promoters are willing to put up the Pacman - Floyd megafight. They admitted that they will be idiots if they will let this boiling cauldron to set idle on the promotional pot. The only stumbling block on this fight to happen is the Gayweather outrageous demand, if that’s the case, then boxing promoters and boxing fans as well should boycott Gayweather completely for good...

Why Mayweather dont want to fight with this brilliant filipino? it is simply because He is BIG DAMN COWARD!!! BOOOOOO>>> Mayweather!!!
if you are really the best pound for pound boxer in the new era show it up men! dont afraid to face the pacman, as freddie roached says, step up to the plate, sign the contract....

Fraud mayweather,jr is a scam artist extraordinaire. He belongs in a jail instead of a boxing ring.

Thank you Mr. Carlos Acevedo for this wonderful article. It really answer the seeming hesitations of Mayweather to fight Pacman. But I think because of these and because of other reasons, it is better for Manny not to fight Mayweather. We may not see a good fight, but it will save Team Pacquiao a lot of troubles. In the end, Manny does not need this fight. He has already proven himself.
I definitely think that the fight will not happen (if not 50-50 share).

If FLoyd make all the excuses so that the fight won't happen, The world will never ever forgive him....It will go down to history that a self-proclaimed pound-4-pound king duck the official pound-for-pound king.

It would be great to have the fight between pacman and floyd and would be happy to pay the ppv just to see the fight. however, it seems that the negotiation for the fight isn't moving and from what i have been reading, the ball is in mayweather's camp now. Floyd wanted manny to call him out and step into the plate, and that's what manny did. Now, its floyd turn to step up to the plate. If you believe you can defeat Manny easily then floyd should not think twice on signing the contract because his record will remain unblemished. Prove that you're worthy to be one of the elite and have your name be listed beside the names of the boxing greats. However, if floyd turned down the fight for another fighter then most of the boxing fans can BOYCOTT floyd's fights.I for one will concur.

Listening up, everyone if and when this fight go down pay close attention what is going to happen in the beganing of the fight. Give credit to Pac-man he's a legand to watch.Pac-man brings excitement to the ring, but this fight there will not be no excitement. Floyd is not afraid he want to see how mush input this fight will get.Pac-man will fall when he meet prettyboy.Roach, said that he have a game plan, Roger got the plan an it's to take him out in the begining of thefight ,by whooping his ass all the way out of the New York Yankees Stadium.

Floyd???? Whos the hell is Floyd??? Aaahh.. I know him. Hes the boring fighter with no lose record and always avoid to tangle with the best fighter in high ranks.. I think he just recently beaten a lightweight... Ahhh... I know him..hehe

HBO is ok but for some rEasons that I don't like is that they patronizing the bad system in boxing wich resulted to the decline of boxing WHY DON'T SOME OTHER NETWORKS LIKE CBS, FOX, BBC, OR EVEN CNN, ISN'T IT GREAT IDEA, WHY HBO NONOPOLIZING BOXING IN AIRING THE GREAT EVENT IN BOXING. WAS THEIR NO OTHER CHOICE? BOXERS CAN'T BE SO GREEDY IF NOT HBO PPV.... IT'S LIKE SAYING GO AS YOU WANT WE NEED CASH, WHERE IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF MAKING BOXING A GREAT SPORT TO WATCH?

Pacman should challenge Floyd with a winner-take-all-he-can-choose-the-weight kind of agreement. This is one fight that will not come true because Floyd and his team will do all they can to avoid it. Maybe Pacman can also add he will agree to 45% if the result will be a draw. This fight is about evil vs
goodness; cockiness vs humility; darkness vs light. Thanks.

@ Albert: I like your idea! "BOYCOTT" all Gayweather jr's fights if he aint figthin Pac! thats good! yeah...we boxing fans should do that you know...coz he's been getting a lot of money by handpicking his opponents, and cheating by the way...and if he says he's more of an Entertainer, well I am so not entertained haha! is he serious? his fights are soooo boring! he's got a lot of excuses. And, he says he's the best? he came back and fought JMM??? wtf was that? the man who cant beat Pac(1 loss & 1 controversial draw to pac)? The man who was floored by pac 4 times in his career? Floyd even cheated w/ the weight, cmon! Floyd is a waste of time. WE ALL KNOW WHO'S NO.1 NOW AND IT IS MANNY PACQUIAO. and WE ALL KNOW HE'S GONNA KNOCK YOU OUT. Sorry Floyd, your days are over. Boxing came back, and it is in the form of Manny Pacquiao. We dont need you no more.

Floyd is a coward!!! no more no less!!!

floyd even floyded (dodged) George Lopez. he still has trauma from RA the Rugged Man's whooping. nice article and great narratives Carlos.
